Incense | The Studio
The artist's atelier is alive with the fragrance of paint, aged wood, leather and charcoal sketches on paper. The afternoon sun spills into the room, a vase of white florals bloom on the table; with tool in hand the artist captures their latest inspiration.

TECHNIQUES PASSED DOWN THROUGH GENERATIONS
ANCESTRAL ARTISTRY
For over a millennium, the revered Koh-shis, also known as the Masters of Aromas, have been crafting the world's finest incense on an island off the coast of Japan. Passed down through generations, the ancestral techniques and the use of only the finest natural ingredients have resulted in our exceptional range of transportive scents.
The Koh-shis' incense is widely regarded as the best in the world, owing to their access to the finest natural ingredients. Grown on the island, the ingredients such as cedarwood, sandalwood and frankincense create the perfect fragrance profile, resulting in some of the world's finest incense.
Using ancient techniques that have been honed over centuries, raw materials are rigorously kneaded to create a rich and aromatic dough that's left to soak up the fragrance for two weeks. This process enhances the scent and ensures it's evenly distributed throughout the incense. The dough is then cut and rolled into long, narrow ribbons, ready to be dried and bundled by hand.
The island's high humidity levels and stable temperatures create the optimal conditions for ageing incense, leading to rich, complex and long-lasting scents that mature and deepen over time.
